Small over big
Working with Plant Medicine is both magic and complex, especially when it comes to the integration, or the ‘life after ceremony’ phase: The coming back home after a difficult or mind-blowing psychedelic experience that has turned you inside out in every way imaginable.
After working with clients in a few hundred integration support sessions to date, I’ve noticed common misconceptions we all seem to go through at one point (while we tend to think that we are the only ones facing them).
One of the main misconceptions?
Chasing big and immediate changes and results. Selling your house to live under a banana tree in Peru straight after your first Ayahuasca retreat, only to come back because you realized that this was ‘too much too soon’ (true story!)
Of course, this is a very extreme example and there are many in the more ‘moderate, but still immediate category’ that are not uncommon (ending your relationship straight after coming home, quitting your job the moment you get back, or calling the person you have unfinished business with while driving home from your ceremony).
What’s the misconception here?
Not the big but the small, consecutive changes in your behavior will be your ally and a potent tool:
I’ve seen clients break powerful behavioral patterns following a psychedelic experience.
The secret?
– Start small
– Start now
– Commit yourself to one concrete action point (your ‘building block’) and take it from there
– And most importantly: Give-yourself-time.
Or, as a client shared yesterday about his ceremony intention (‘to feel and be more in my heart’): I’ve been chipping away at it and will continue to while moving forward.
His first ‘building block’?
‘I will tell my children I love them more often’.
The power of change lies not in the Big, but in the small.
